It’s National Infertility Awareness Week, (NIAW), April 23-29th, 2023!

Infertility is a very painful struggle and chances are, you know someone who is struggling to get pregnant and have a baby.

1 in 8 couples has trouble getting pregnant or holding onto a pregnancy.  But, in general, we are completely uninformed about how to best provide emotional support for our loved ones during this painful time.

In honor of this week being Infertility awareness week, I wanted to share some Dos and Don’ts for those of you who may know a good friend or family member struggling to have a baby.

13 Ways to Support a Loved One Struggling with Infertility

  • Listen without judgment – Let them share their feelings and concerns without feeling like you’re judging them.
  • Show empathy and understanding – Try to put yourself in their shoes and understand how difficult their journey must be while they struggle to grow the family of their dreams.
  • Avoid giving unsolicited advice – Unless they ask for it, try not to give advice on what they should do.
  • Be there for them – Offer your support whenever they need it, whether that’s a listening ear or a shoulder to cry on.
  • Educate yourself – Try to learn about infertility and the struggles they may be facing so you can better understand their situation.
  • Check-in on them regularly – Let them know you care and are thinking about them regularly.
  • Offer practical help – Offer to do tasks like cooking, cleaning, or running errands to help alleviate their stress.
  • Be sensitive with questions – Avoid asking insensitive questions about their struggle to get pregnant.
  • Offer to accompany them to appointments – Offer to go with them to fertility appointments or to sit with them during treatments.
  • Celebrate the milestones – Be supportive and celebrate with them when they have positive milestones or results.
  • Respect their privacy – Keep their journey confidential unless they choose to share it.
  • Stay positive and hopeful – Encourage them to stay hopeful and positive about their future— it really matters.
  • Remember that everyone’s journey is different – Recognize that infertility is a unique and individual journey for each person, and be supportive of their experience.
