Two-Week Wait: Finding Calm and Control in Fertility’s Most Challenging Days

The two-week wait (TWW) often feels like an eternity. Every twinge or symptom—or the lack of one—can leave you overanalyzing, hoping, or even doubting. But what if you could transform these 14 days into an opportunity to nurture your mind, body, and spirit?

With a mindset shift, the TWW can become less about waiting and more about preparing for what’s to come.

Before we dive in, watch The Fertility Godmother Show episode on the TWW below for expert advice and actionable tips to help you through this part of your fertility journey.

Why the Two-Week Wait Feels So Overwhelming

The TWW isn’t just about waiting—it’s about the emotional weight it carries. It’s a tug-of-war between hope and fear, with every thought feeling like it could change the outcome. But you don’t have to spend these 14 days holding your breath.

Instead, focus on nurturing your mind, body, and heart. Here are five practical steps to help you shift from stress to preparation during this critical time.

1. Embrace the Healing Power of Laughter

Laughter is an incredible stress reliever. It reduces cortisol levels, boosts happy hormones, and even supports implantation and pregnancy rates.

What to do: Watch your favorite comedies, revisit funny shows, or call a friend who always makes you laugh. Avoid intense dramas or thrillers during this time—stick to content that brings joy.

2. Get Creative

Engage in activities that allow you to express yourself and stay present in the moment. Creativity helps keep your mind grounded and brings joy.

Ideas to try: Painting, baking, gardening, or dancing to your favorite songs. These activities shift your focus from overthinking to thriving in the now.

3. Nourish Your Body

Fuel your body with nutrient-dense, fertility-boosting foods to support this critical stage of your journey.

Fertility-friendly foods: Grass-fed beef, salmon, leafy greens, beets, and avocados.

Hydration: Drink plenty of water to stay hydrated and support your body’s processes.

Nourishing your body is about more than just food—it’s about treating yourself with love and care.

4. Establish Morning Routines

Start your day with rituals that create peace instead of chaos.

Morning ideas: A calming meditation, a gentle walk, journaling, or sitting in the morning sun. These simple acts set a positive tone for the rest of your day.

5. Connect With Loved Ones

Surround yourself with supportive, uplifting people.

Ways to connect: Plan a coffee date with a friend, take a walk with a loved one, or enjoy quality time with your partner. These connections remind you that you’re not alone in this journey.

Shifting From Waiting to Preparing

The two-week wait is an emotional rollercoaster, but you can transform it into a time of empowerment. By asking yourself, What does my body need right now? What does my heart need right now?, you can create a foundation of strength and care.

This mindset shift isn’t about controlling the outcome—it’s about preparing yourself for whatever comes next. If the test is positive, these weeks become a time of nurturing. If it’s not, they’ve been a time of building resilience and self-compassion to keep moving forward.

Your Next Steps

You don’t have to navigate the TWW—or your fertility journey—alone. Personalized support can make all the difference.

Click here to qualify for a free clarity session with The Fertility Godmother. Together, we’ll create a plan tailored to your needs, helping you move forward with confidence and calmness.

The two-week wait doesn’t have to feel like forever. With the right mindset and tools, you can approach this time with hope, strength, and clarity. You’ve got this—and we’re here to support you every step of the way.

Breast cancer is the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. One in eight women in the United States will be diagnosed with breast cancer in her lifetime. However, early detection momentously improves your chances of successful treatment.

There are over 2.8 million breast cancer survivors are alive in the United States today. Ashkenazi Jewish women are at a higher risk for breast cancer. Unfortunately, I have many young female friends that have been diagnosed with breast cancer. Fortunately for the time we live in today, most of them are survivors.

Tips for Breast Health Awareness

Early detection greatly improves your chances of successful
treatment.

Self-Exams—Do it every month

Regular
self-exams will help you to be familiar with how your breasts look and feel so
you can alert your doctor if there are any changes. The best time to do self-exams
is during your monthly cycle.

Thermal Imaging

Thermography, also called thermal imaging, uses a special camera to measure the temperature of the skin on the breast’s surface. Doctors can also perform full-body imaging scans using thermography to predict if any areas of the body show signs of abnormality or inflammation. No study has shown that it’s a good screening tool to detect breast cancer early when the cancer is most treatable. The American Cancer Society (ACS) does not recommend thermography as a replacement for mammograms.

Breast MRI (Magnetic Resonance Imaging)

Recommended for screening women who are at high
risk for breast cancer, usually due to a strong family history and/or a
mutation in genes such as BRCA1 or BRCA2. It’s not recommended as a routine
screening tool for all women. If you are considered high-risk, you would have
breast MRI in addition to your annual mammograms (X-rays of the breast).

Breast MRI screenings result in more false
positives — the test finds something that initially looks suspicious but turns
out not to be cancer. If breast MRI were used as a screening tool for everyone,
many women would end up having unnecessary biopsies and tests, not to mention
the anxiety and emotional distress.

The American Cancer Society (ACS) recommends
that all high-risk women — those with a greater than 20% lifetime risk of breast
cancer — have a breast MRI and a mammogram every year.

Mammograms

Mammograms
don’t prevent breast cancer, but they can save lives by finding breast cancer
as early as possible. A mammogram is an x-ray of the breast tissue and
can often show a breast lump before it can be felt. If you are 38 and are
planning on getting pregnant soon, it is best to get your mammogram before you
get pregnant. Make sure to get your mammograms done annually from age 40 on,
unless there is a family history of this.

3-D mammography
(also called digital breast tomosynthesis, digital tomosynthesis, or just
tomosynthesis) creates a three-dimensional picture of the breast using X-rays.
Several low-dose images from different angles around the breast are used to
create the 3-D picture. Several studies have found that 3-D mammograms find
more cancers than traditional 2-D mammograms and also reduce the number of
false positives.

Some
people are afraid to get a mammogram, because of the radiation. It is
important to understand, a cell phone exposes us to more radiation than a
mammogram once a year. Actually, the amount of radiation you are exposed to is
equivalent to taking a trip on an airplane from LA to New York City.

I
strongly believe that the benefits of getting your yearly mammogram far out way
the risk. It can make the difference between life or death.

Healthy Habits

Living
a healthy, active lifestyle can help you reduce your risk factors for breast
cancer and other illnesses. Having a balanced, nutritious diet that is low in
sugar helps reduce your risk of developing breast cancer. A high-fat diet
increases the risk because fat triggers estrogen production that can fuel tumor
growth.

Early detection saves lives, monitor your breast health and don’t forget to get checked!

What is Polycystic Ovary Syndrome?

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is not just the number one cause of infertility or the most common hormone disorder affecting women. This disorder has many other serious health concerns, too.

Most women with PCOS are overweight and develop many small cysts on their ovaries. These cysts are not harmful, but they do cause hormonal imbalances in your brain and your ovaries. It happens when a hormone called LH (from the pituitary gland) or levels of insulin (from the pancreas) are too high, which results in extra testosterone production by the ovary.

What are the Symptoms of PCOS?

This hormonal imbalance expresses itself with symptoms of acne, excess body and facial hair, irregular or non-existing periods, and weight gain. It is most familiar as a cause of female infertility yet, in addition to infertility, PCOS is associated with insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and an increased risk of miscarriage, heart disease, and endometrial cancer.

The exact causes of PCOS are not known, but one theory associates it with insulin resistance. The job of insulin is to attach to the cell wall and allow glucose into the cell so it can be converted into energy. If the cells do not have enough receptor sites for insulin to attach and do their job, glucose remains in the blood, which elevates blood sugar and is stored as fat. Suffice it to say this is related to the increase in obesity, difficulty with weight loss, diabetes, and heart disease also associated with PCOS.

Insulin also stimulates cells in the ovaries to grow. These cells normally produce a small number of male hormones called androgens. Ovarian tissue does not become resistant to insulin, so when there is too much insulin, the ovarian tissue makes too many follicles. This leads to the production of too many androgens and there is a loss of ovulation, or menstrual cycles, which creates the challenge of trying to conceive.

PCOS can affect as many as 5 to 10 % of women of reproductive age. These symptoms can begin in the teen years. In fact, with the rise in childhood obesity, there has been a significant increase in PCOS found in teenage girls. Typically, it remains undiscovered until a woman is having difficulty becoming pregnant. Treatment can help control the symptoms and prevent long-term problems.

PCOS is often linked to genetics.

PCOS seems to run in families and can be passed down from either your mother’s or father’s side, so look for signs of insulin resistance and diabetes. The nutritional state of the mother during the time of conception also has a huge impact on how the baby’s ovaries develop. This huge responsibility should be an incentive to become as healthy as possible before getting pregnant.

How Is PCOS Diagnosed?

In addition to the physical signs and symptoms, the diagnosis of PCOS is made based on a number of lab tests to check blood sugar, insulin, and other hormone levels. A pelvic ultrasound is frequently performed to look for cysts on the ovaries. These are often called a string of pearls, as they look like a string of pearls draped on the ovary.

Treatment

The first line of treatment for PCOS is exercise and eating foods that are low on the glycemic index. The glycemic index measures the rate at which ingested food causes the level of blood glucose to rise. This means eating foods that manage blood sugar. It is recommended to:

Eat a higher protein diet in the form of lean meat that has not been treated with hormones.

Cut out all forms of refined sugar and carbohydrates such as white bread, pasta, and white rice.

Eat whole grains or gluten-free foods.

These things are crucial for managing the symptoms of PCOS, and this is the best form of medicine. Clomid is usually prescribed at lower dosages for PCOS patients to reduce the chance of ovarian hyperstimulation (exaggerated response to excess hormones) occurring

Treatment for infertility from PCOS:

If you are overweight, weight loss of as little as 5 percent over six months can lower your insulin and androgen levels. This will help balance hormones and restart your menstrual cycle and ovulation. Healthy eating and regular exercise are especially important if you are planning to have a baby.

If weight loss alone does not start ovulation (or if you don’t need to lose weight), acupuncture and Oriental medicine can be helpful to restore ovulation. Several months of treatment may be needed. Acupuncture can also be helpful when used with medicated treatments.

Medication such as metformin/Glucophage can be used to help lower your insulin levels and help you start to ovulate. This treatment may also take several months.

If metformin/Glucophage does not work, fertility drugs such as clomiphene or gonadotropins can be used to stimulate ovulation for timed intercourse, intrauterine insemination or in-vitro fertilization.

If you smoke, quit. Women who smoke have higher levels of androgens than women who don’t smoke. Smoking also harms egg quality and increases your risk of heart disease.

PCOS cannot be prevented or cured, but it can be managed.

Many women experience improvement in the signs and symptoms of PCOS if they are able to maintain a healthy weight. In order to have a higher quality of life, regular exercise and making conscious decisions about food will lower the risk of infertility, miscarriages, diabetes, heart disease, and uterine cancer. Treatments such as acupuncture, Oriental medicine, and hormone therapy can help control problems caused by hormones. Regular checkups are important for staying ahead of the condition and catching any PCOS complications.

I saw this sign posted at Gelson’s Market and was so excited
to see that there is an effort to promote awareness about BPA in our food!

BPA (bisphenol A) is a synthetic estrogen used in making many plastic products like plastic bottles, baby bottles, children’s toys, hygiene products, and even medical devices. It is also part of the epoxy resin that lines many metal cans, like those used for canned vegetables, fruits, and meats.

Most people already try to avoid BPA after reports showed that it is an endocrine disruptor and that it may raise blood pressure. And, since it is an endocrine disruptor, bisphenol A may also lead to hormone imbalance, fertility issues including frequent miscarriages, lower egg production, early puberty, increased risk of reproductive cancers, low sperm count and other hormone-related problems.

Other research has shown a link between BPA and asthma, obesity and breast cancer.

How does BPA get into the body?

The primary source of exposure to BPA for most people is
through the diet. While air, dust, and water are other possible sources of
exposure, BPA in food and beverages accounts for most of the daily human
exposure.

The good news is that bisphenol-A has a relatively short half-life,
so it is possible to reduce levels quickly and drastically by avoiding common
exposure.

We know that BPA is found in many plastics and especially
water bottles (which is one of the many reasons to avoid them), but it may also
be hiding in places you wouldn’t expect:

Canned Goods: It is often used in the lining of the cans used for vegetables, soups, fruits, and other foods. Since it is present during the high heat canning and sterilization process, it may be present in even higher levels in these foods.

Solution: Use fresh or frozen fruits and veggies.

Receipts: Paper receipts are often lined with BPA. This includes airline receipts, movie tickets and any receipts printed on thermal paper. The EWG warns that it can transfer to your hand from the receipt and enter your body through your skin or if you touch food or your mouth.

Solution: Skip the receipt. Even if you get and recycle the receipt, it may contaminate recycled paper products like toilet paper.

Dental Sealants: Dental sealants and composites can contain bisphenol-A.

Solution: Talk to your dentist before any dental work.

Plastic Wrap: Often contains bisphenol-A and other plastic chemicals.

Solution: Use parchment paper, glass storage containers or homemade food wrap instead.

Coffee Pot: Sadly, many coffee pots are a source of BPA and since hot water is used, there is a higher chance of it leaching into food.

Solution: Use a French Press or Glass Kettle instead.

Soda Cans: So, there are many other reasons you shouldn’t be drinking soda, but you can add this to the list. Even “healthier” sodas made with stevia can have BPA in the lining.

Solution: Avoid drinking soda.

Plastic and Paper Cups: Plastic cups often contain bisphenol-A, but paper cups are often lined with it too.

Solution: Bring your own reusable mug (and the planet will thank you too).

Other Kitchen Plastics: Bisphenol-A is also found in many kitchen plastics besides water bottles, including plastic food storage, plates, utensils, and cups.

What can you do to prevent exposure to BPA?

Don’t microwave polycarbonate plastic food containers. Polycarbonate is strong and durable, but over time it may break down from overuse at high temperatures.

Plastic containers have recycle codes on the bottom. Some, but not all, plastics that are marked with recycle codes 3 or 7 may be made with BPA.

Reduce your use of canned foods. Look for products packaged in glass or lined cardboard instead of cans.

When possible, opt for glass, porcelain or stainless-steel containers, particularly for hot food or liquids.

Don’t take paper receipts at ATMs, grocery stores, etc. unless you really need them.

It’s worth mentioning that many BPA-free products have simply replaced BPA with bisphenol-S (BPS) or bisphenol-F (BPF). BPS and BPF have similar effects on the body as BPAs. So, choose wisely when looking for alternative solutions.

Without smell, we would not be able to detect if there are
poisons in the air, if the leftovers you are about to eat are still good, if
the perfume you wish to wear, really smells good. Smelling can be powerful by
helping you jog your memory or igniting your emotions. That is why it is no
surprise that aromatherapy has been around since Ancient
Egyptians 3,500 years ago.

Aromatherapy can help relieve symptoms, such as nausea,
anxiety, pain, etc. through different scents. These scents come from natural
plants that are processed into oils, such as lavender from a lavender flower,
rose from rose plants, etc. Each of these scents has its own power over the
human body.

There are a variety of oils that are used to help patients
manage their symptoms. It is important to find essential oils that are made
100% pure. Some companies add to their essential oils, which takes always from
the properties that help you feel better. This is one of the reasons why
researchers do not have congruent studies about essential oils.

As Time
magazine pointed out, there are numerous factors that can contribute to the
benefits of essential oils. For example, when caregivers put on a lemon balm to
care for dementia patients, they couldn’t tell if the smell improved dementia
patients health or if it was the combination of caregivers attention and lemon
balm.

This matters because if it was a combination of the two,
then that would mean that the balm needs to be accompanied with an additional
variable. Yet there have been other
studies on smaller groups that confirm that aromatherapy works to alleviate
symptoms. Ultimately, it depends on the user if it is beneficial to them or
not.

Essential Oils of Aromatherapy

Ancient therapy still leaves its mark today

It may look like something straight out of a science fiction film, but a time-honored technique known as cupping is becoming more and more popular among busy professionals. Used both as a way to relieve muscle pain and illnesses, as well as a form of stress relief, cupping is a style of alternative health care therapy that focuses on the movement of blood, energy, and body fluids using glass suction cups. The benefits of cupping are numerous and include relief of flu symptoms, congestion, and muscle stiffness.

Cupping falls within the realm of Oriental Medicine and is most often used in conjunction with Acupuncture and Moxibustion. Cupping dates to the Jin Dynasty (265-581), when the famous Taoist Ge Hong (281-341) described this method in his book, A Handbook of Prescriptions for Emergencies. The original cups used in this therapy were made from animal horns and used for draining abscesses. This type of cupping became known as Jiaofa, horn technique.

During the Tang Dynasty (618-907) China underwent many economic, cultural, and medical developments, and cupping was used to treat pulmonary disorders. During the Qing Dynasty (1644-1840) the Chinese began to use bamboo cylinders as cups. The treatments expanded to help with headaches, colds, body aches, joint pain and abdominal pain. Glass cups were created in the 20th Century. Since the glass cups are transparent, it is easier for the therapist to control the treatment. Cupping therapy continues to be used for arthritis, digestive disorders, muscle pain, respiratory conditions, infertility, and irregular menstruation.

Cupping, as a technique, now extends beyond its original goal of draining the body of abscess fluids, and people of many professions and backgrounds have discovered the benefits of regular treatments. Cupping gives people a sense of calmness during and after treatment, providing both the benefits of detoxification as well as massage. Cupping is based upon the Chinese Medical Theory, which believes that the body is invaded by external pathogens such as wind, cold and dampness. This essentially creates a pattern of ailments we know today as headaches, colds, body aches, joint pain, abdominal pain, and infertility.

Unlike many other types of treatments, the process of cupping is able to help dispel cold and release external pathogens. One idea behind the method of cupping is that the suction from the cup pulls the skin and fat away from the muscle creating a myofascial release. This allows blood to flow freely and improves circulation to an area that is congested. It is also effective for extracting toxins or pathogens from the open pores. Cupping has been found to work within the body up to four inches deep causing tissues to release toxins and activate the lymphatic system.

Cupping is a wonderful and therapeutic technique but remember that it can leave temporary marks on the skin for a couple of days. The process should not hurt, and it is advised that you do not use the technique over large blood vessels, ulcers, or over the abdomen on someone who is pregnant. If you are susceptible to bleeding or have a high fever you should also not try cupping. Usually, this therapy is done with acupuncture or other types of bodywork treatment done by a licensed acupuncturist, but some physical therapists have discovered this technique and have incorporated it into their practice. Each cupping session can last anywhere from ten to fifteen minutes and can be repeated until the problem is resolved.

Varied cupping techniques greatly enhance many acupuncture and bodywork therapies and intensify the therapeutic and detoxifying aspects of current treatments and we love using cupping to enhance our patient’s treatments and wellness routines at AIM Women’s Wellness Clinic. Since there’s virtually no risk to this treatment, expand outside the box next time you decide to do some bodywork and give cupping a try. The therapy is thoroughly relaxing and is wonderful alone or as the perfect end to any treatment.

Most Americans are missing important nutrients in their regular diets.

For women, nutrients are an enormous part of their lives. Especially if they are trying to conceive or maintain a healthy lifestyle. As discussed in our Fertility Cleanse blog, nutrients are vital if you are trying to get pregnant. A healthy body means a healthy and friendly home for the baby.

Even if you are not trying to get pregnant, making sure that you get all the nutrients you need is important to your longevity of life and how you function throughout the day. Think about it. If you are not getting all the nutrients you need, then your body is more at risk to having less energy, less strength, and less motivation.

If you focus on what healthy foods you put into your body, you will begin to see an increase in:

Energy and focus

Immunity

Improvement in well-being

And much more!

Now let’s look into the main nutrients most Americans are missing and how to work them into your diet.

It’s actually easier than you think!

Calcium:

When we hear the word calcium, we automatically associate it with bones and milk. It’s been programmed into our minds. Yet calcium does more than keep your bones healthy. Calcium can help strengthen your heart, allow your blood to clot, and maintain muscle function.

Our bodies do not create calcium. It is a nutrient that we always need to gain by putting it in our diet. We have to maintain calcium by eating resources that are rich in it.

Fortunately, there are many food sources (besides milk) that can help restore our calcium, such as:

Whole fat plain yogurt

Swiss cheese

Whole milk

Salmon

Cooked spinach

Folate:

Folate provides numerous benefits for women. It can help decrease the risk of miscarriage. It can prevent colon cancer, heart disease, and more. It can help people that have a deficiency in absorbing nutrients as well.

Folate can be found in numerous fruits and veggies:

Spinach and Lettuce

Broccoli

Okra

Asparagus

Bananas

Melons

Lemons

Citrus fruits, such as orange juice

Potassium:

Potassium does more than help with cramps. Potassium helps your heart, kidneys, and other organs to function properly in your body. Potassium is crucial to your life because it acts as an electrolyte in your body. It allows your body to manage a variety of processes, such as nerve signals and more.

If you don’t want to eat bananas as your main source of potassium, then try these other sources:

Baked sweet potato

Tomato paste

Whole fat plain yogurt

Yellowfin tuna

Avocados

Fiber:

Fiber is the bowels and digestive system’s best friend. Fiber helps regulate the bowels and intestines. Other benefits of fiber are that it helps in achieving a healthy weight, controls blood sugar, and lowers cholesterol. Fiber can also help eliminate toxins from your body by nourishing your microbiome. It does this by feeding your good bacteria to help maintain your body.

When increasing your fiber, you may need to add a supplement to your daily routine, because getting 30-40 grams of fiber a day just by eating is challenging. you get a supplement look for one that does not have a lot of fillers and chemicals in it.

Try these fibers with a supplement:

Steel Cut Oatmeal

Cooked black beans

Baked sweet potato, with peel

Small pear

Artichokes

Lentils

Almonds

What to Do with This Information:

As you can see, it is rather easy to get your fill of nutrients. Instead of reaching for a bag of chips, eat a pear or a cup of whole fat plain yogurt with some berries. Instead of ordering a hamburger at your favorite restaurant, choose a healthier alternative that might involve chicken and veggies.

What you put into your body matters, especially if it means that you could possibly starve yourself of nutrients. Gaining the nutrients, you need can be as easy as switching out one of your bad meals.
