Why should I care about the difference between fat loss versus weight loss?
It’s important to understand these two concepts. Wait, aren’t they the same thing you ask? NO! They are not and here is why it is important for you to know the difference as you use a variety of assessments to monitor your health.
First, let’s define a few things:
What is fat loss and what is required?
In the case of fat loss, you are striving to reduce total body weight by only reducing the total fat mass in your body. First, you need to understand your body’s composition; how much of your total weight is composed of lean mass and how much is your total fat mass. This is the information that hydrostatic body composition testing most accurately provides you. Knowing your lean mass is how you will know what your minimum amount of calories you need to support your resting metabolic rate (RMR). By feeding your body the number of calories it needs but changing the ratio of protein, carbohydrates, and fats you can make your body selectively burn fat and not lean mass. I know it sounds odd, eat enough to lose weight, but in this case, you are not losing weight, you are specifically losing fat, creating a healthier you.
